We can’t always promise what you’ll see at the Men With Hats show, but we can guarantee what you WON’T see.

The same old crap.

Men Without Hats is an unconventional comedy show at the Twin Cities’ most unconventional comedy club. The first Thursday of every month, some of the best stand-ups in town take the stage to perform anything but their regular acts. They may even do it sitting down. Or backwards. A guy actually did that once*—it killed!

So why would a club dedicated to the art of stand-up promote a show featuring anything but?

Look at it this way. If you like the regulars you see at our weekly Friday and Saturday shows, then here’s your chance to see them at their most original and creative best. If you’ve seen a show here and hated it, this one’s guaranteed to be more to your liking!

And in the ultimate break from convention, it’s absolutely free. Even hats are optional.

Because that’s what Men With Hats is all about.**

Breaking all the rules. Exactly once a month.

The show is free, all seating is first come, first serve. The show starts promptly at 8pm and runs about 90 minutes.

*The guy was Chris Knutson. He did his whole act backwards, and won an award for it.***

Every so often the Comedy Corner Underground has an event for the Minneapolis
Comedy Scene. This is one of those things.

In the long running theme of making fun of things they like the best and brightest comics from around the twin cities will be here to rip bill a new mouth to feed his fat face with. (Cause you see, Bill is a heavy set man, and there may be jokes about his weight. The Dais includes:

Your headliner also got his start at the Comedy Corner Underground, and always brings his best when onstage at his comedic place of birth.

Before he began telling jokes, Gus was a film actor of very little renown, amassing over two dozen feature film credits, largely in terrible movies you should never see (Baby Geniuses II, Hellraiser V, Halloween VIII). BY sheer chance, he also snuck in some kinda cool ones without roman numerals behind the titles. (Saving Silverman, I Spy, North Country).

This newcomer is already making big waves on the comedy scene. A charismatic family man whose stories take surprise twists and turns, Pfoser walks the likeable-vs.-offensive tightrope with true panache, and his material will make you laugh or cringe (sometimes both).

Either way, he’ll get a big reaction from you and you’ll want to hang out with him after the show. (Pants optional.)

Think of history’s great actor-director teams: Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese. Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese. Basically, whoever and Martin Scorsese.

The point is, truly great cinematic pairings come along only one to three times in a lifetime. But if it can happen to Martin Scorsese, it can happen to us.

To that end, we present Triple Feature. Three great comedians are paired with three up-and-coming directors to write and produce original video sketches. All three videos are premiered in one night, followed by live stand-up performances by their respective stars.

See what happens when talent meets talent in a multimedia, multidimensional comedy event times three. If history is any indication, you might even witness some.

History, that is.

This month we feature some of the very best and brightest comedians int he city. First of all we have:

Chris Maddock with David Tveite (May 18 - 8pm - $9)

Washington, D.C. native Chris Maddock brings an every man’s attitude to smart, sharply written material that runs the gamut from shrewd observations to social satire.

Shortly after moving to Minnesota in 2008, Chris’ peers voted him Best New Comic in the Twin Cities, and the following year he took the top prize in the Funniest Person in the Twin Cities Contest. Over the next two years he made a rapid transition from newcomer to rising star, playing hundreds of shows each year and touring the top clubs throughout the midwest and East Coast.

Chris is a jovial iconoclast whose good-humored but aggressive act makes a lasting impression.

David Tveite (pronounced like “whitey” with a “˜t’ in front of it) is a tall, perpetually embarrassed Caucasian fellow with scissory elbows and gorgeous brown eyes. A native Minnesotan, David headed west when he came of age (because that worked out so well for the Donner Party), beginning his comedy career in Seattle. In addition to last year’s Bridgetown, David has performed at the Bumbershoot Arts Festival and was a semifinalist in the 2011 Seattle International Comedy Competition. Powered by a chronically grandiose personality and a voracious need for attention, David’s comedy is a guided tour of a brain that never, ever shuts up.

Shannon Thompson with Derek Sandin (May 19 - 8pm - $9)

No newcomer to comedy, Shannon’s unique writing style and sense of irony set him apart from other comics. His unflinching ability to make fun of himself, and anyone else he damn well feels like, shows his comedic courage knows no bounds.

Dwight York with Sam Spadino (May 12th - 8pm - $9)

“I hope you like jokes” may seem an absurd way for a comedian to begin a show but those are the words that comedian Dwight York uses to introduce himself to his audience each night. Then the joke-slinging begins and never ends until York says “goodnight” a couple hundred perfect one-liners later.

During the first of many appearances on the nationally syndicated Bob and Tom Radio Show, York joked, “I was homeless for awhile. I didn’t want anyone to know so I slept in front of a Ticket Master.” It sent the morning crew howling with delight, became Tom Griswold’s “new favorite joke” and was featured on The Bob And Tom CD You Guys Rock. Since then York has been a regular guest on the show and was part of the 2005 Friends of Bob and Tom Show Concert Tour.

Dwight at the Great American Comedy Festival

In August of 2009 York appeared on the main-stage at the Legendary Buffalo Chip Campground for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. York will be returning again this summer where he will be headlining the Buffalo Chip Comedy Club with Dwight York and Friends.

York’s CD Quickies (Stand Up! Records; 2009) can be heard on Sirius XM Satellite Radio’s Raw Dog Comedy Channel and was rated a “top ten comedy release of the year” by The Serious Comedy Site. Punchline Magazine says that Dwight York, as inventive as he is suggestive, is what Steven Wright would be if Wright had Robert Schimmel’s blue streak, and that’s a compliment to all three master comics.

Kjell Bjorgen with Sam Wilbur hosted by Marty Loso (May 5th - 8pm - $9 adv, $10 door)

Kjell Bjorgen started his comedy career in Los Angeles, California in 1999. After three years he gained some notoriety by performing in both the Chicago Comedy Festival and the Montreal Comedy Festival.
He left Los Angeles in 2003 to hone his craft and perform on the road. His perseverance paid off when he was asked to be a part of the Lewis Black “Nothing’s Sacred” tour in the Fall of 2005.

He was a hit back at the Aspen Comedy Festival and his Live at Gotham was received with great fan fare.

Steve Gilespie with Nate Abshire (April 28th - 8pm - $9 adv, $10 door)

Hailing from Minneapolis, where after receiving a graduate degree in something or other Steve became really bored and started telling jokes into a microphone. He first began honing his craft at the Acme Comedy Club, and has quickly emerged as a fast-rising talent in one of the strongest and most competitive comedy scenes in the country. Metromix magazine named Steve one of the top comedians in the Twin Cities.

Steve has been on the road non-stop for the past three years, appearing in some of the best comedy clubs in the country. Including opening appearences for Harland Williams, Jim Breuer, Gilbert Gottfried, and Doug Benson.

In 2010 he performed at the Laugh Your Asheville Off Comedy Festival and in 2011 he appeared in the prestigous Boston Comedy Festival.

Nate Abshire started performing to spite a girl who wouldn’t return his calls, and he never looked back. Audiences love his sardonic wit, keen writing, and playful stage presence. Based in Minneapolis, he performs in clubs throughout the Twin Cities and the greater Midwest. He is a recording artist for Stand Up! Records. The girl still won’t return his calls. He no longer cares.

Just because this is the 4/20 Show, don’t expect one of those deals where we pretend to be high writing the show description. I know, who’s pretending? (Ha!) Anyway, if we were gonna go that route, wouldn’t it be funnier just to send out the invites the day AFTER the show?

Actually, that would be pretty funny … we should totally do that!

But we won’t want, because we don’t want you to miss it. Or forget it.

The 4/20 Show is our annual celebration of all things stoner. It’s to stoners what St. Patrick’s Day is to drunks. Except with alcohol. And comedy. And probably food. No, definitely food.

Za(ch)ats is a monthy comedy show that we’re really proud of having at our room. Local comedian extraordinaire Zach Coulter brings in 3 different comedians which perform 10-15 minute comedy sets, followed by a 5-10 minute interview of the performer. Zach has a natural charm that brings real life to every interview. It’s like an interview on Conan, if Conan only interviewed standup comics while drinking and cursing a whole bunch.

Justin Caesar is obsessed with cracking the safe to laughter, and he’s found the right combination of topics both typical and taboo, bringing new light to what makes people tick, and what ticks people off! A ninja can kill a man a hundred different ways… Justin Caesar knows even more ways to get to your funny bone. He..ll reach in, yank it out and show it to you before you die laughing. Justin has worked ‘all over the damn place.’ he has worked with luminaries as jeff cesario, scott hansen, alex cole and the stagebenders.

Phil Kolas started comedy in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, while attending college for philosophy. Eventually he decided to do something with his life, so he dropped out and has been putting his nose to the comedy open mic grindstone for over a year now, appearing in Gus Lynch’s LAUGH.ROCK.REPEAT show, and winning the monthly Atlas comedy belt in February of this year.

Come watch him get to the bottom of life’s comedic & philosophic mysteries, like the ontology of a dick joke, and what the hell “ontology” means.

New Kids On the Corner is our monthly showcase of all things new and fun about the Minneapolis comedy scene (screw you St. Paul). Six of seven new comics will each be given more time then people would trust them with (about 10 minutes) to stretch out those noob wings and show us how funny they are. After the new guys a pro comic closes out the show with a 15-20 minute set. Fun times are had by everyone involved.

Tim Harmston was once described by a fellow comedian as “an idiot with smart material.” That winning combination has led to appearances on CBS’s Late Show with David Letterman, Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham, the Bob and Tom radio show, and Wisconsin Public Radio. Tim has performed at the Rooftop Aspen Comedy Festival, the Great American Comedy Festival in Norfolk, NE, and the Laughing Skull Comedy Festival in Atlanta. Originally from Western Wisconsin, Tim started his career in Minneapolis, which he currently calls home. When he’s not on stage, Tim enjoys making smart, idiotic videos for his website, timharmston.com.

A relative newcomer to Minneapolis, in just a few short years, Bryan Miller has made a name for himself in the incredibly competitive local comedy scene. With brilliantly crafted jokes, and a taste for the absurd, Bryan is an up-and-coming comedian to watch. From growing up in a funeral home, to his equally warped current reality, you will find yourself howling with laughter at all the bizarre twists and turns in Bryan Miller’s life.

Raised on the rough streets of the suburbs, Dan has been making friends and family laugh his whole life with his own brand of humor. In 2010, Dan popped up on the Minneapolis comedy scene and has been touring the Midwest’s finest dive bars and comedy clubs since. As a 2010 Acme’s Twin Cities Funniest Person Contest semi-finalist, Dan was soon nominated for Best New Comic of the year by his peers. He also loves peanut butter…

Punchline Punchout! (Mar 29th - 8pm - $5)

Ten comedians are split into two teams and then given a topic to write about 12 hours before the show. Each comedian is pair against a person of an equal level on the opposing team (Headliners vs Headliners, Features vs Features, Ect…). There’s also a comedy short contest with comedians each making 2-3 minute videos. Oh, you’ll also get to see a killer performance from Chris James who’ll close out the show.

This show starts promptly at 8pm and costs $5.
